Being a homeowner is something that many of us work towards for years. While you may have a place to call home, there are also countless things that need to be done in order for you to have a home that you love. Weekend projects become a routine thing and the list of things that you need to keep up with gets longer.

Here at PRN Roofing, we know that remembering that your roof needs routine maintenance is easy to forget. Unfortunately, the longer that routine maintenance goes undone, the more damage it’s capable of doing. For that reason, we want to take a minute to cover a few of the routine maintenance pieces that you should be doing to your roof.

Removal of Debris

Our roofs protect us from bad weather, broken branches, and the like, but we need to remember that in order for it to continue to do this, we have to take care of it. Our roofs, though tough, can experience damage if too much debris builds up on it. Anything from fallen leaves to an excess of water can cause some serious damage to your roof — so take the time to clear it off.

With fall we see that our roofs are covered in leaves. It takes one rainfall for these leaves to make their way to the gutters and clog them up. This is not only added weight to the structure of your home, but it’s an easy way for water to build up and do some damage.

Though it’s not the best way to spend a weekend, taking some time to clean off your roof of any debris that has fallen on your roof and clear out your gutters. While it’s not the best project to work on, you’ll be glad that you spent the extra time to keep your roof in prime condition.

Check for Damage

The best way to ensure that your roof remains in good condition is by taking preventative measures. When a storm hits, there is a chance of damages happening to your roof. After a storm has passed, we always recommend going and check for any damages that may have happened. The attic of your home is the best way to determine this. Leaks and water damage are a sign of a crack or opening that ought to be tended to in a timely manner. By checking on these types of signs after big storms you can save yourself from bigger problems.

In the case that you do notice damage to your roof, you will want to get that sooner than later. We’ll talk about that form of maintenance in our next point.

Prioritize Repairs

Damage is common with roofs. With the amount of exposure that they have to extreme weather, every homeowner can anticipate the occasional leak or cracked shingle. While these types of issues are common, you don’t want to let them go for too long. Regardless of how big or small the damage of your roof may be, you need to prioritize any repairs that need to be done.

As we mentioned briefly in our previous post, damages with a roof can start out small and quickly escalate to large, expensive repairs. Rather than let it get to that point, make sure that handling repairs on a timely basis is a form of maintenance that you’re always staying on top of.

Trim Branches

Earlier we talked about how important it is to clean any built-up debris from your roof. Though this is a great way to maintain the quality of your roof, you can tackle the problem even earlier on by keeping an eye out for any branches that are growing above your home. Not only are branches capable of creating damage on their own, but when you throw harsh weather into the mix you can wind up with a disaster on your hands.

If the branches above your house get too heavy from wet weather, there’s a chance of them breaking off and falling onto your roof. Now, this extra weight could cause for the roof to get heavy enough to fall through, or it could lead to a leak. Either way, the only way to ensure that this doesn’t happen is to trim any branches that are close to your home or directly above your roof.
